Leading the charge is the brand-new Fairfax Premiere 15.6m trailer for CoolTranz, complete with a Carrier Vector HE19MT unit expertly installed by our Transcold team.
Fairfax Unveils First Fully Autonomous, All-Electric Refrigerated Trailer System

Fairfax is thrilled to announce a groundbreaking achievement in the logistics industry: the first fully autonomous, all-electric, engineless refrigerated trailer. This innovative solution is set to transform the way goods are transported across the country while significantly reducing environmental impact.

The vision of a future where trucks deliver fresh produce without producing harmful emissions is now a reality thanks to the Fairfax ZE (Zero Emissions) by combining cutting-edge technology from Transcold, Carrier and SAF-Holland to produce this NZ first.
Fairfax has created a game-changing trailer that is not only environmentally friendly but also highly efficient.

“We are incredibly excited to introduce this revolutionary technology to New Zealand,” said Chris Devoy, CEO of Action. “This is a major step forward in our journey towards a zero-emissions future and demonstrates our dedication to sustainable logistics.”

The heart of the Fairfax ZE is its all-electric eCool refrigeration system by Carrier, powered by a revolutionary SAF-Holland electric axle. This innovative design supplied by Transcold, eliminates the need for a traditional diesel engine, resulting in zero tailpipe emissions and reduced energy consumption in standby mode.

The idea for this groundbreaking technology originated from Action Group engineer Edd Collins. "I was captivated by the potential of combining an electric generation axle with an electric refrigeration unit," said Collins. "It's incredibly rewarding to see our vision become a reality, and I believe this project will set a new standard for efficient and sustainable heavy transport."

“Partnering with Fairfax on this project has been a truly inspiring experience,” said Brad Jackson Transpecs Product Sales Manager for SAF Holland. “Our advanced axle technology, combined with Fairfax’s expertise, has created a solution that sets a new standard for sustainable transport.”

Fairfax envisions a future where the ZE trailer is integrated into a zero-emission truck, further reducing emissions and advancing sustainable transport. While the company focuses on their new Signature ZE trailer innovation, it is committed to supporting the development of a comprehensive zero-emission transportation system.

Action Manufacturings’ joint venture with SEVA celebrates eight years in 2022 and continues to go from strength to strength with new orders from QAS received this week, making 2022/23 our highest production year yet!

ALBANY | ONE CHAPTER CLOSES, ANOTHER OPENS

November kicked off with everyone determined to push production out and hit our targets. The team has been hard at work, from shipping high volumes of containers to Australia and packing up the Albany site for relocation to Hamilton, with only one last push to go during the next couple of weeks.

THE LATEST AUGUST ACTION!

OUR SUSTAINABILITY JOURNEY - ACTION OMNIPANEL

Action’s Omnipanel fibreglass is uniquely durable. Made from styrofoam sandwiched between fibreglass, it is stronger, lighter and has water resistance and thermal qualities beyond anything else on the market. Moreover, the floors are fully sealed to prevent moisture or dust from compromising the vehicle’s integrity. This allows Action Motorhomes to have an extended lifespan of up to 50 years. Durability is the most sustainable option there is, However, fibreglass is not easily reprocessed or recycled as a composite material, although we are taking steps to reduce our waste.

Compare our 2016 Platinum (6-birth motorhome) to our redesigned 2022 Motorhome. We have reduced moulded external fibreglass by 68.5%, that’s 260kg down to 83 kg. With the shower included, we have reduced the total moulded fibreglass by a whopping 60% since 2016. That’s 304.5kg down to 122.5kg! This is due to replacing fibreglass trim with aluminium and alloy extrusion around the outside of the motorhome.

We are on a clear path at Action, committed to becoming a future-fit business by reducing our waste, emissions and finding sustainable solutions so that we can be the best version of ourselves for our customers.

Fairfax body used on NZ’s first 100% electric refrigerated logistics truck

Fairfax body used on NZ’s first 100% electric refrigerated logistics truck

Fairfax are proud to have partnered with Foodstuffs and the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) to build New Zealand’s 1st electric powered refrigerated truck.

With EECA’s backing, Foodstuffs pulled together a brains trust of some of the country’s brightest and best transport, electrical and refrigeration engineers to convert the standard Isuzu FVY, 24 tonne, 6 wheel diesel truck to be 100% electric powered.

Fairfax were tasked to provide one of their high quality bodies, with the strength and thermal properties to exceed the needs of refrigerated delivery trucks.

Fairfax customer experience manager Craig van der Nagel said the body offers a low tare weight, recessed load restraint tracks and high density polyurethane insulation which is ideal for Foodstuffs delivery needs.

“Everything on the truck, including the fridge and tail-lift, is powered by electricity - it is almost silent!”

“We completed work on the body just before New Zealand went into lockdown for Covid-19. The truck was then handed over for signwriting.”

The electric truck will operate from the Foodstuffs Distribution Centre in Grenada Wellington under the stewardship of Foodstuffs North Island Transport.

After extensive testing and driver training, the electric truck recently set out on its first official delivery run to New World Miramar, a 60 km round trip. With a range of between 150 and 200 km and capable of transporting 14 pallets of product at temperatures as low as minus 15 degrees centigrade, the truck completed its inaugural journey with ease.

Fairfax director Chris Devoy said the increasing importance, and commitments, of reducing emissions presents a huge opportunity for innovators. Our team relishes the opportunities and challenges these projects bring.

Fairfax moves to join partner Action in Hamilton

Fairfax moves to join partner Action in Hamilton

Two manufacturing brands are joining forces to operate out of a new production facility at 32 Kaimiro Street in Te Rapa.

After more than 40 years of operating from Great South Road in Auckland, Fairfax Industries is moving its manufacturing to join Hamilton-based partner Action.

The new shared facility allows the two companies to team up, share knowledge and utilise resources to meet the needs of a rapidly-evolving transport industry.

A showroom has been purpose-built at the site to showcase vehicles, welcome customers for factory tours and host design consultations over a cup of coffee. An official opening is in the pipeline when physical distancing restrictions ease.

The Fairfax site in Auckland will remain operating and will benefit from an increased repairs capacity.

Action purchased Fairfax in 2018 with a vision to share the learnings and capabilities between two like-minded companies operating at different ends of the transport sector.

Action is a fast-growing industry leader, producing specialised light commercial vehicles, with Fairfax producing its unique, frameless truck bodies for the heavy commercial market since 1971.

Fairfax customer experience manager Craig van der Nagel said the growing synergy between the two companies ensures they are well-placed to deliver solutions that increase New Zealanders access to essential goods.

“We are now offering a huge range of optimised delivery vehicles for both dry and temperature controlled goods. From, utes, vans, and courier vehicles, to scratch-built bodies - sized from 2m to 15.7m. We work with our customers to tailor vehicles to their exact needs.”

Action director Chris Devoy said the move is an opportunity for the two companies to directly collaborate on projects.

“Fairfax has a proven reputation for reliability and durability and Action is design-led, producing vehicles for users with high expectations around safety, mobility, functionality and aesthetics,” Devoy said.

“The importance of getting goods to market reliably and cost effectively has always been essential to keep the New Zealand economy moving. When lockdown restrictions were eased and delivery demand surged, we could see many ‘pain points’ come to light.”

“Our teams are accustomed to rising to any challenge and throughout New Zealand’s lockdown didn’t stop developing innovative solutions. We are now equipped with a huge range of solutions ready to go for delivery providers.”

INNOVATIVE B-TRAIN HITS THE ROAD

Click here to see the full article as published in New Zealand TRUCKBODY and TRAILER

B-Train Trailers Load in One Movement

CANTERBURY TRANSPORT OPERATOR KERRY INNS’
new B-train has trailers that can be driven together and
loaded as one, using a Phantom loader that drives through
the unit.

Work began on the trailers in May and they were handed over in late
August to owners Kerry and his wife Traci who operate K & T Trucking
at Rolleston, just south of Christchurch.

The load-through B-train is used by the Goodman Fielder contractor
to deliver fresh milk to Nelson, and went into service on September 1.
The hard-sided trailers have alloy floors rated for forklifts and
the custom-built Phantom loader, and are fitted with American made
insulated Whiting roller doors marketed in New Zealand by
Structurflex.

One roller door is fitted to the front of the rear trailer and the other
is at the front of the first trailer.

To push the trailers together for loading, the sliding fifth wheel on
the first trailer air release is activated, the manual brakes are applied
on the rear trailer and the truck backs the first trailer till the rubber
bump stops on the trailers touch.

When the trailers are pushed together, a fold-down floor section
bridges the gap between the front and rear trailers so the cargo can be
loaded in one single movement from the barn-style rear freight doors.
“It means you can back up to the dock just once without needing
to split the unit and back each trailer individually,” says Michael
Carpenter, the managing director of Fairfax industries which built the
two trailers.
